ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

RxART is working together with artist Jonas Wood to respond to a request aimed at enhancing the appearance and experience of a wide corridor in the Radiology Department of Mass General Hospital for Children (MGfC). Wood, who is originally from Boston, conceived of a project that will transform the ordinary hallway walls with a vibrant floral design that will be applied using Acrovyn, a tough, enduring, and medically-approved wall material.

During his childhood in Boston, Wood spent significant time exploring his parents’ and grandparents’ gardens, from which he would collect samples of his favorite plants. This childhood fascination later reappeared in the artist’s work following his move to Los Angeles in 2003. There, Wood was captivated by the area’s rich natural surroundings, and painting a broad selection of plant species becoming a key focus of his work.

For his RxART project at MGfC, a compilation of Wood’s orchids and bromeliads will repeat up and down the corridor, infusing the space with a rainbow of natural forms, as well as a touch of whimsy: look closely enough, and the discerning viewer might spot a snail, vase, or even a couple basketballs humorously disguised as blooms. Upon completion of the installation, this project will mark Wood’s second RxART collaboration. Click here to learn about his first RxART project, featuring playful, patterned privacy curtains at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC.
