We prioritize project evaluations to better understand how we can optimize RxART’s impact on patients and staff and best contribute to the growing field of arts and health.

How Does Art Impact the Human Experience of the Pediatric Emergency Department?

As a part of the Beryl Institute’s Patient Experience Grant Program, RxART collaborated with NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem on a research study that sought to provide insights about the experiences of patients, families, and staff in the Pediatric Emergency Department, where RxART installed two site-specific projects.

Impact of Art on the Human Experience in the Pediatric Emergency Department research report

Overall, our qualitative and

quantitative results demonstrated the added visual art positively impacting both the patient and employee experience, and thus overall, the human experience.

As we elevate the human experience in healthcare, it is important to consider arts as a medium to humanize the healthcare environment.

Can a visual art installation in the outpatient clinical setting helps ease fear and anxiety in patients with neurologic and neurodevelopmental conditions?

RxART worked with Dr. Abigail Ley of the Children’s National Health System, who observed a focus group of patients before and after a site-specific installation by artist Alexis Rockman was completed at the Montgomery County Outpatient Center in Rockville, MD. The study examined the impact of the artwork on the children’s behavior by monitoring markers of stress and anxiety, including blood pressure levels and heart rates.
