ABOUT THE ARTIST
Derek Fordjour (b. 1974, Memphis, TN) lives and works in the Bronx, NY. Derek was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to parents of Ghanaian heritage. He earned a BA from Morehouse College, an MEd in Arts Education from Harvard University, and an MFA in Painting from Hunter College. Fordjour’s work is filled with athletes, performers, and individuals who play key roles in cultural rituals and communal rites of passage. His paintings are crafted through a collage-based process that incorporates materials such as cardboard, newspaper, and other pigments. The textured, layered surfaces he creates are as intricate and dynamic as the subjects he portrays, resulting in compositions that are both visually engaging and conceptually rich. His art explores a broad spectrum of emotions, from celebration and ecstasy to melancholy and lamentation, allowing him to communicate with audiences both inside and outside of traditional art spaces.
