ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
In late 2024, RxART expects to unveil a new commission by the artist Mickalene Thomas at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. Thomas’s project, a large-scale mosaic mural, will be located on the mezzanine level of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital’s lobby. Her project proposal features a dense, visually engaging, and neatly arranged composition of collaged paper cutouts. Blocks of solid blues, yellows, and oranges provide a sky-like backdrop for a landscape of found floral imagery. In a nod to the hospital’s namesake, Thomas highlights here images of the late Supreme Court Justice’s favorite flowers: freesias and white hydrangeas. Because of the mezzanine’s visibility, patients, visitors, and staff members will encounter this uplifting and engaging visual focal point immediately upon entering the hospital, ideally setting a positive tone for their visits and welcoming them into this prominent Brooklyn healthcare facility.
Our deepest thanks to the Rallis Foundation and the Ruth Stanton Foundation for your generous support of this project. This project was made possible by RxART in partnership with the Arts in Medicine Department at NYC Health + Hospitals and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.
